(Online) Marketing
When a website has been designed and launched it is only natural to expect people to visit it. However website owners are starting to realise that more needs to be done to get people onto your site and then to convert those visitors into paying customers.
This is where (online) marketing can make a difference. First the webpages themselves can be optimized using accessibility and usability principles primarily for the benefit of the website visitor but also can have the effect of being "friendly" to search engine "robots" when they come to visit.
Search Engine Optmization
Search engines provide much of your website's daily traffic. If you can tap into a rich stream of internet traffic then you can reach much of your target market. Many Search Engines e.g. Google look at a number of variables which then together determine your ranking or the position of your listing on their search results.
While blatant and unsavoury manipulation is frowned upon and often penalised by the Search Engines there are ways to improve your rankings in ways that also can improve the way your website works when someone visits your site.
Using the principles of accessibility and usability we can make sites that are user-friendly and easy to navigate but also tend to show up higher in Search Engine results.
Accessibility & Usability
Accessibility generally means designing sites for people with disabilities in mind e.g. visually-impaired. But it also has the side benefit of making sites easier for all people to navigate and understand whilst making it more receptive to search engines.
Usability is essentially about making the site user-friendly so that most if not all visitors to your site find it easy to navigate and reach the information they require in a timely, efficient manner. |
